The first piece in my series of insect drawings is complete, yay! :winner:
You can watch the timelapse video here!

Prints of this piece are available on my Etsy!

I'll be creating a cicada for my next piece, but first I need to finish some commissions. Sweating a little...

Hey Danni-jo! I've been a huge fan of your work! Your work is crisp and clean!!
I was wondering if you could tell me exactly when you spray your art with fixative?
Is it between colors? Or is it just one spray when you're done? Thanks!
Your work is amazing! I love it so much!

ARE YOU IN ART SCHOOL

Lol thank you! I'll try to answer your questions the best I can:
Do you study every subject you draw? (ex: Luna Moth)
- Yep! I use a ton of references to put together my artworks. For my Luna moth I was mostly inspired by Art Nouveau jewelry pieces, so I spent a lot of time studying the motifs and styles of Art Nouveau (and some Art Deco) jewelers.
I was heavily inspired by jewelry made by René Lalique and Faberge when it came to designing my Luna Moth.

How do you come up with ideas for pieces?
- I collect tons of images that inspire me, so sometimes things from others works will spark an idea. I'm always looking out for new artists/creatives to follow. I've been on an Erté and Fred L. Packer kick lately.
Alternatively, I love going outside and wandering around. As cliche as it sounds, the beauty of nature is incredibly inspiring and I get a lot of my ideas that way. Some pieces come very quickly and I can capture the idea very easily. Others take FOREVER to get right. :frustrated:

Are you in art school?
- Not anymore! I graduated 3 years ago with a major in Illustration at my local community college. I didn't go to "art school" per say, but I definitely majored in art!

Can you give me a step-by-step breakdown of your process with pencils?
- It'd take me forever to describe it in full detail. But the most important parts of my process are:
1. Plan your ideas ahead of time. Colored pencil is not a very forgiving medium and major mistakes will be irreversible.
2. Sketch out the composition and plot the general colors scheme (if applicable). If necessary, do this on a separate sheet of paper. I always sketch out my full color pieces in black and white beforehand. This ensures that all my details and composition are exactly how I want them.
3. After the composition is planned out and ready to go, begin by lightly building up color/shading. Working from light to dark is always the best way to do it, wether it's color or graphite.
4. Linework comes last! I NEVER do my black/final linework first. I always build up the values and colors before hand, then go over and outline what I need to as a final step.
5. Add highlights! White gel pen and white acrylic wash are my favorites! They help brighten up your highlights and add a bit of sparkle and detail to your final piece.
6. Spray it with fixative! Keeps your colored pencil works shiny and combats wax blooms, also keeps your graphite/pen in place and prevents smearing!

That's the basic gist of it! I have some speed drawing videos on my YouTube and plan on doing some in-depth tutorials when I get the chance. ^^

I've seen one in the US when I was on a holiday trip.

It was surprisingly big. The wingspan could fit your entire palm.

Unfortunately, on the next day, I saw it being bombarded by ants, killing the moth in the process.

They're everywhere here in the south, since they develop from Tobacco Worms (caterpillars), and I've those everywhere here, especially formerly growing up on a farm as a young kid.

Wow, this is completely fantastic! I love how beautifully this piece is colored and drawn...
I have a question!I'm incredibly out of practice with colored pencils, do you have any tips for getting lines so smooth? How do you go about preventing the white spots that come from drawing on better paper? How do you go about blending the colors so well, and getting such crisp lines?
Haha, if you could answer, that'd be super cool! I'm definitely watching you, your art is incredible :)

I love the old gets displayed here, it almost feels like a minimalist peace. Any plans on doing other less elegant insects like grasshoppers in the future?

I won't be doing a grasshopper, but the Luna Moth is probably the most elegant of the insects that I have planned for this series. ^^
